George Hunter
Inducted into the Brockville and District Hall of Fame June 10th, 2011.
George Hunter was an orphan whose parents were killed in a car accident
in 1914 in Glasgow, Scotland. He and his older brother William were sent to
Canada to the Fairknowe Home where they grew up.
George shared his love of sport by setting up a Brockville team to play in the
Ontario Scottish Soccer Association for men under age of 30. This league
for men age 30 ran from 1931-1941 when World War Two called several
players including George. After the war, he established a Walk-in Boxing
Centre for Brockville youth on Perth Street in 1947. This ran until 1952
when his love for the game of hockey took over. In 1955 he established a
hockey team for premier young players called the CE Hunter Flyers. George
financed this team with his own money. The team became the present day
Brockville Braves. George served as a founding trainer for the Braves until
1976. If a player showed up and didn’t have the equipment, George would
purchase it for the player. George’s belief was the youth were better off
playing sports than getting in trouble. He was voted Brockville Kinsmen
Sportsman of the Year for six years in a row from 1962 to 1967.
